Are Gutter Guards Worth It in the Pacific Northwest?

By the Larchmont crew · June 2026 · 3 min read

In a place with this much rain and this many evergreens, gutters clog fast, so gutter guards get pitched hard here. They help, but they're not magic. Here's the honest take.

What gutter guards do well

A good guard keeps leaves and the bigger debris out, so your gutters clog far less and water actually reaches the downspout. On a house with fir or cedar hanging over it, that alone can save you a couple of ladder trips a year and a lot of overflow.

Where they fall short

No guard is truly maintenance-free here. Fine fir needles and the seed pods our trees drop can still work through or pile on top, and moss can grow on the guard itself. They cut the cleaning way down, they don't end it.

They matter more with our rain

When a gutter overflows in a downpour, that water runs down the siding and pools at the foundation, which is how rot and wet basements start. In our climate keeping the gutters flowing is not cosmetic, so guards that reduce clogs earn their keep on the right house.

When they are worth it

If your roof sits under heavy tree cover, guards usually pay off in saved cleanings and fewer overflow problems. On an open lot with few trees, plain gutters and a yearly clean may be all you need. We look at your roof and the trees around it and tell you whether guards make sense for your house.

Common questions

Do gutter guards eliminate cleaning? No. They cut it down a lot, but fine needles and moss mean an occasional check is still smart here.
Are gutter guards worth it under evergreens?Usually yes. Heavy fir and cedar cover is exactly where guards save the most clogs and overflow. On an open lot the payoff is smaller.
Guards or a yearly clean?

It comes down to the trees over your roof, and that takes one look at your place. Ask during a roof quote and you'll get a yes or a no with the reason attached, not a pitch.
